The Pet Dog Phenomenon & Urban Canine Syndrome

While man’s best friend has became a permanent part of the contemporary urban landscape, the dog’s breed specific characteristics such as, herding, hunting, guarding or rescuing have little place in the city. Many of today’s companion dogs have a fundamentally altered life style from that of their working predecessors. This virtual “re-domestication” puts significant mental and physiological stress on dogs that, consequently, manifest themselves in disturbing behavioral problems. I call this phenomenon the Urban Canine Syndrome or UCS.

How can responsible dog owners address UCS?

Training, Prevention &Rehabilitation through GesamtPETwerk

To help urban dog owners with the formidable endeavor of reducing or eliminating Urban Canine Syndrome, I have developed a comprehensive training concept: gesamtPETwerk, or “Total pet work.” With this approach, owners can prevent their dogs’ UCS based stress and its symptoms. Most importantly training, then exercise and a variety of mentally stimulating activities help to avoid the many annoying and sometimes serious behavioral problems. With the gesamtPETwerk method, adult dogs can be rehabilitated, while puppy owners can stay a step ahead of problems by starting training as early as six to eight weeks of age.

What is GesamtPETwerk?

In gesamtPETwerk, or Total Pet work training, (created out of the German word, Gesamtkunstwerk or Total work of art) I treat and train dogs within their own complex environment, using non-aversive (avoiding punishment) training methods that emphasize positive reinforcement. Through this method, I help dog owners to better understand their dogs and to teach them to build their dog’s life responsibly around their own busy lifestyles. GesamtPETwerk also offers different customized training programs for dogs at different life stages and different backgrounds. Most importantly, GesamtPETwerk always happens in real life and real time, on the street, in the elevator or face to face with the mail carrier.

Puppies, Adult Dogs and Your Lifestyle

My comprehensive puppy training will teach you the nuts and bolts of raising a puppy whether you are a single person or have a family. Most importantly, my training methods will help you to integrate dog ownership into your lifestyle and help to raise a mentally and physiologically healthy and happy dog. The training sessions will address such essential issues as various house training methods, how to prevent your house from getting chewed up, or the fundamentals of puppy manners. This basic training is exciting for both the new owner and the puppy as they learn and grow together. Readings and homework will be provided.

Understanding your dog

In order to communicate with your dog, it is essential that you understand him. Therefore, in addition to learning to handle your pet, I will teach you to read your dog’s body language in a variety of situations.

Behavioral issues

Most of us would like to take our dog along when go places. Some behavioral cases need only fine tuning or minimal adjustments I will teach you to properly socialize your dog. However, as a qualified behavioral consultant, my work also focuses on treatment, rehabilitation and behavioral modification of dogs from a variety of backgrounds. In gesamtPETwerk, I use non-aversive (avoiding punishment) positive approaches in real life situations to address a wide range of behavioral problems, including,
• Unnecessary barking
• Barrier frustration (lunging on leash fence fighting)
• Fighting/aggression
• Fear issues
• Digging
• Chewing/destruction

So, let’s get rid of the skeletons in the dog house and start enjoying your dog now…
